WeevilWipeout and the Global Palm Weevil Problem
The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is one of the most destructive pests affecting palms worldwide. Once established inside a palm trunk, larvae feed unseen within internal tissues, often leading to irreversible structural damage and eventual tree death.
The pest has spread rapidly across:
• The Middle East
• North Africa
• Southern Europe
• South Asia
• Southeast Asia
Millions of palms are affected every year, threatening date production, coconut cultivation, and ornamental palm landscapes.
A New Approach
WeevilWipeout has been developed as an organic treatment platform using carefully selected plant-derived compounds combined with advanced delivery methods designed to reach the areas of the palm where weevil activity occurs.
The system has been designed to support several application approaches including:
• trunk treatment
• foliar and crown spray
• soil and root-zone application
• integrated delivery through irrigation systems
The aim is to provide growers and agricultural authorities with a flexible treatment system that can be integrated into existing pest-management programmes.
Current Development Stage
WeevilWipeout is currently undergoing laboratory and field trials in collaboration with a leading university in the Middle East.
These trials aim to assess:
• effectiveness against adult and larval weevil stages
• optimal delivery methods
• long-term protection strategies
• integration with sustainable agricultural practices
Initial reports show the extremely high efficacy against both adult and larval stages. Further technical data may be shared with qualified partners under appropriate confidentiality agreements.
What is WeevilWipeout?
WeevilWipeout is an organic pest-management platform developed to target the red palm weevil and other destructive palm-boring beetles.
Unlike conventional systemic insecticides, which rely heavily on synthetic chemicals injected directly into palm trunks, WeevilWipeout has been developed using plant-derived compounds designed to interact with the insect's biological systems.
The formulation approach focuses on:
• plant-based active compounds
• biodegradable carrier systems
• delivery methods that reach pest entry points within the palm
The aim is to provide growers with a natural alternative that can be incorporated into integrated pest-management programmes while reducing reliance on heavy chemical treatments.
